| ASA donates authentic *Raffles\\\' Bedouin saddle imported by Roger Selby |
|
Cheryl Showah of ASA Farm donated an authentic Bedouin saddle that was imported by the famous Arabian horse breeder, Roger Selby, and used on *Raffles #952 (whom Selby imported from Crabbet Park Stud) to the Arabian Horse Galleries, Museum of the Horse at the Kentucky Horse Park. The saddle is very rare as it has a seat made of camel leather, while most of the bedouin saddles are made of wool. She also donated a matching set of reins, and several sets of antique stirrup irons, made of cast bronze. Many years ago, Cheryl traded her Stubben Siegfried saddle with her friend, Lois Selby Perry, for the Bedouin saddle. Bill Cooke, Curator of the Museum, gave Cheryl and her husband, Andre, a personal tour of the Museum while they attended the Arabian Sport Horse Nationals in September 2009, while their Junior Stallion, Covenannt ASA won a National Top Ten in Jackpot colts. |

| ASA Farm donates Arabian Native Costume to Arabian Horse Galleries |
ASA Farm is donating an Arabian Native Costume made from beautiful creme silk, gold thread and orange silk, made in Aleppo, Syria, to the Arabian Horse Galleries. The costume was made by hand by Cheryl's mother, the late Hazel L. Showah, who was a seamstress and quilter of note in the Danbury, CT area. She owned and operated "The Fabric House", and was a well-loved and respected teacher of that craft for many years.
The saddle was used on the Arabian, Sur Balastra+, in Southern California, while Cheryl was in addendance at Cal Poly, Pomona, earning her undergraduate degree.
One class in particular stands out in Cheryl's mind. "Sur" was in training with Bill Hughes (and we were also being helped by Bill and Lee McKew) for reining at the time, and we were at a show in Santa Barbara. The girth, a new western yarn-type, had stretched, the saddle let loose, and Cheryl said, "Whoa!", to which "Sur" responded with a sliding stop with his rear-end very low, Cheryl coming off behind the stopped horse and landing on her FEET!
When the ring steward ran over to see if he could help, Cheryl said, "Just get me back up on the horse ASAP as the judge (Dick Dady) knows my trainers from CT, (Mert Sartre, and Chris Sartre) and I want to make sure that the horse looks good! Cheryl won a 5th out of a very competitive class on what was a "very authentic" type of costume with very little glitz and glam, which was in vogue at the time. |

Breeders in the Arabian industry now have a valuable alternative when breeding not only for a Polish perfornance horse, but with BONNE VIVANT testing CLEAR for CA (N/N), halter breeders now have a way to add that long, upright neck to their programs, flawless conformation including very correct legs, big, flat well-set knees, short-coupled bodies and excellent toplines and tail-carriages, in addition to the pretty from the Polish Kuhailan pedigree line. |
